Founded in 1874 as a NWMP fort

Fort Macleod, a small prairie town in Alberta, was founded in 1874 as a part of the North West Mounted Police (NWMP)s efforts to establish law and order in the newly-formed Canadian territories. The NWMP, responsible for opening up trade routes and providing protection to Indigenous communities, selected site for its strategic location near key rivers and trading routes. In addition, the site provided an ideal spot for establishing agricultural settlements; however, the fort was not completed until 1876. After its completion in 1876, Fort MacLeod became the headquarters of three divisions of the NWMP’s operations.
